By Tanya Singh Our Graduate Trainee, Tanya Singh, discusses how she went from career uncertainty after graduating to landing her dream job in PR. Discovering My Passion for PRA week into my second year studying History at university, I came to the sudden realisation I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life after graduation. This thought (and the overwhelming feeling of dread that accompanied it) was one that would visit me frequently. Generally though, after a day or two of fretting, more urgent stresses with rapidly approaching deadlines displaced my worries about my future career. A couple months later, while witnessing the visible relief on the faces of my fellow students who had already secured spring weeks and summer internships, my anxiety about the future returned. An in-depth discussion with my best friend ensued. The conclusion? That my future career must be client-facing and fast-paced. It should revolve around building relationships, ideally with stakeholders from a range of diverse industries. Most importantly, it should give me the opportunity to write. The concoction of skills and company values I’d declared as a perfect fit for me seemed so obviously aligned to the field of public relations that I felt silly having not considered PR before. An Exciting Work Experience at a Top PR AgencyAn online PR course, some networking and a very useful chat with Marcus (one of our lovely Senior Account Executives) later, I arrived at 37 Pear Tree Street in December 2022 for the first day of my two week work experience. Long story short, those two weeks solidified my desire to join Flame PR after graduation. If I detailed everything I enjoyed we’d be here all day (but I’m happy to do so over coffee). But, what really stood out to me though was the opportunity to challenge myself and work with inspiring clients operating in a range of different industries, from healthcare to cybersecurity. On Day 2 I was reading through academic papers and scientific reports on biotechnology. By the end of Week 2, every member of the team had given a lot of time and energy into my training. While much of this came from their inherently supportive nature, it was evident that it also came from their genuine interest in their clients’ missions. In typical Gen-Z behaviour, I place workplace culture high up in my list of priorities when thinking about my career. Attending the Flame Christmas social, watching the 2022 World Cup at the pub and dragging half the team out to a random concert were just some of my highlights. These socials were accompanied with the highly visible dedication seen across the team to respect each other’s non-working hours. Safe to say Flame PR met my work culture expectations. Supportive and Engaging Work CultureThe jump from university to a full-time job is a daunting one, but Flame PR have made it a seamless.
My first week here as a Graduate trainee not only reflects my experience at the agency more than a year ago, but heightens it. I’ve enjoyed delving straight in, and I feel reassured by all the guidance I’ve been given along the way. It also helps that Flame PR’s team, from the grads all the way up the seniors, are some of the friendliest and funniest people I’ve met! We’re always keen to take on work experience and interns here at Flame PR, if you think this is something you’d like to explore please do drop us an email at [email protected] or call us on +44 203357 9740
